The FDA first approved facial fillers date back to 1981 when bovine collagen was used for cosmetic injections. Since then, there has been huge advancements made within the aesthetics industry and now most modern day dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid (HA).
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate found within the connective tissues in our body. The FDA has approved the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for the treatment of moderate to severe facial lines, volume loss and skin folds.
At Clinic No 8 we are proud to say that we only use premium quality dermal fillers which are FDA approved and from traceable sources, this is to ensure high levels of safety and reliability are maintained.
Dermal fillers are one of the most commonly requested medical aesthetic procedure worldwide, and are often used in combination with wrinkle relaxing injections as part of a holistic facial rejuvenation treatment plan. They are also used as stand alone treatments for areas such as the lips and nose to mouth lines.
Replace lost volume, redefine, contour
Dermal filler injections are made up of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies. It is hydrophilic which means it can absorb upto 1000 times it’s weight in water and is therefore extremely hydrating.
They are used to replace volume in the face from areas that have aged eg. cheeks, jaw & chin. They are also used to smooth out lines and wrinkles in the skin eg. nose to mouth lines (nasolabial folds), mouth to chin lines (marionettes) or lipstick lines (perioral).
We will first discuss your current health and any medical concerns and your goals of the treatment during a consultation to ensure that dermal fillers are the best option for you.
Before treatment we always take before pictures. This is an important part of the process as it allows us to see the improvement along your treatment journey.
Depending on which area to be treated and which technique, a topical numbing cream may be applied.
The treatment time varies depending on the area(s) being treated, but we allow plenty of time for your procedure to ensure you are as relaxed as possible.
Our Aesthetic Nurse Laura will then complete the treatment. Once finished we will take after pictures so we can compare the difference. We will also discuss with you aftercare advice and provide you with any follow up details.
Everyone is different, but depending on the area to be treated and the technique used, dermal fillers can be uncomfortable so a topical anaesthetic cream may be used to improve your comfort.
As with any medical procedure, there are some side effects to keep in consideration when having dermal fillers. The most common include some mild bruising, swelling and tenderness at the site of injection. This normally subsides after a few days.
Some more serious concerns to be aware of include infection or a blockage in a blood vessel which causes occlusion of blood to tissues. An occlusion is a serious condition which requires immediate attention, therefore it is important that you contact the clinic immediately if concerned. All risks, benefits and alternative treatments will be discussed at your consultation.
You will see a difference straight away, but there may be some swelling. The full effects will be from 2 weeks after the treatment.
The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers gradually gets broken down by the body so the duration of your results will vary from person to person. The duration will also depend on the product used and the site of injection. In most cases, dermal fillers will last around 6-12 months, sometimes upto 18 months.
